One early morning, around 2:46 am, I woke on the couch with the TV still on to the sound of drumming. It was a commercial for Teach NYC on PBS. In my delirious state I noticed a mural I painted shown with the word "ARTS" above it. Thinking I was still dreaming, but unsure, I pressed record on the DVR. The next morning I checked to see if it was real, and it was.

India Street Mural Proposal

In life it is sometimes, but not always, equally as important to document one's failures as well as one's victories. Councilman David Yassky is sponsoring a major public arts project in which 5 artist will be able to paint murals on a 300' x 40' wall in Greenpoint. Submissions were open to the public. Above was my proposal. It was rejected. No reason given, which is expected. Does it matter why? There is only doing and not doing. You like or no? That is the basis for my art. Take it or leave it. No grand verbose explanations. Stimuli. Anyway, its been sometime since I threw my hat into the "open call" arena. Why ask for it? Life is filled with all sorts of wonderful rejection without the slightest urging. But alas, the size of the wall drew me in. Good luck to those selected. Looking forward, sort of in a wish it were me way, to seeing what goes up.

Mighty Tanaka is proud to present As Is, the artwork of JMR. This event seeks to bring communities together through a pop-up gallery located in the popular upcoming Clinton Hill area of Brooklyn. Through the usage of this alternative space to display fine art, this art show looks to expand the interpretation of art in Brooklyn, mirroring the beauty of fine art with the seemingly raw environment of Brooklyn life.

As Is: The Artwork of JMR-- JM Rizzi, or better known as JMR, has adapted a unique mixture of neo-abstract expressionism w hints of contemporary pop to create a style all is own. Having worked in both the street art world as well as the gallery world, JMR brings his iconic imagery to Clinton Hill . As he looks to demonstrate the scale and motion set forth by early abstract expressionists, he reinterprets the ideas within his own personal adaptation. Originally hailing from Brooklyn, New York, JMR has grown up with the influences of street art and the established art world constantly around him. Through his own individual, hybrid street style, he has dedicated himself to helping art fit into the public arena. Having participated in the highly successful 11 Spring St show in 2006, he has gone on to produce art for hotels and restaurants, as well as completing building sized murals in Manhattan. Having just completed the design for a line of clothes, which were featured at a recent fashion show during NYC’s fashion week, JMR looks to expand the idea and integrity of his art to the next level.

Woodward Wall: Finished (Chinese New Year)

It is with great pride that I showcase the finished piece. Bearing in mind that the location is in Chinatown, I wanted to create a painting that represented, or at least respected, the neighborhood culture. I've always been inspired by the big colorful dragon masks that parade the streets amid fireworks and smoke and falling confetti. I think I captured that.
The size is approximately 14' x 6', split into 4 panels.
Big thanks to John and Kristine Woodward of the Woodward Gallery for giving me the space to hang this piece.

This is my first attempt at putting up a two panel piece. Its a little crooked on the right, but i know what went wrong. I had it lined up perfectly, put in a screw on the right side of the panel, and assumed it was still aligned. It wasn't. When you're using safety screws, you can't take em out. Either way, 8' x 8'. The start of a new adventure in dodging Jake while getting up.

This weekend I was given the opportunity to repaint a wall I had done in 2004. Those of you in NY know how hot it was out there. The streets were still filled with people showing there Puerto Rican pride. Everybody showed me great appreciation for what I was painting. Big thanks to Sinclair and Kristen Smith for letting me paint on their home.

This one gives you an idea of the size. The girl walking by, as I was trying to get some quick photos before the rain, just happened to be wearing a scarf and dress that matched the piece perfectly.

I recently came across this drawing on an adult hotline card that I used as a bookmark when I read "One Hundred Years Of Solitude", by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Sometimes books become time capsules for things that might ordinarily be discarded. Pieces of colored paper found on the street, a flyer, stickers, jotted down notes that are tucked away and forgotten.

A study for a new painting waiting to be executed. I feel I've gotten the figurative/representational bug out of me and am pulled back to the abstract. A place I feel most comfortable. In the beginning of this past summer I had become disillusioned with making work that was purely abstract and wanted to test myself to see if I could meld my style of art into people. To make something that when I viewed it I could ask myself what it was, and have an answer. Now that thats done, I look to the void of unreason to create things that may seem chaotic and jumbled. That evoke an emotion without a narrative. With this in mind I may well find myself at the end of this winter looking for faces again. We shall see...

International Hostel: Lobby

On 103 and Amsterdam is an historic building that once held the widows of Civil War soldiers until thier final days. Now it bustles with the young adventurous travelers from around the world as New York City's largest hostel. Not everyone there is on vacation. Some guests bare the mark of old fashioned New York crazy, and rumors of the undead widows unwilling to move on to the next realm. The lobby holds a mural I recently created. The idea behind its subject matter was "New York City welcomes the world".

for those who were there, the wooster on spring exhibition was intense. many things have been written and a million photos taken. i was fortunate enough to see it form from the inside over a few weeks, make friends with beautiful people from far away places, experience the 3 day stimuli blitz, and even add a corner piece to it. for me it started a year that has brought great changes in both my art and life. a marking point. someting that will stay in my heart until its done beating.

The views along the riviera are gorgeous. The beach is very picturesque. The lack of sand does not dissuade some from sunbathing. At first i thought she had washed ashore. When she moved i knew i had to reach for the camera.

Back from Europe

After 3 wonderful weeks of travelling I have returned to New York a much inspired and jetlagged person. The trip itself was indeed a productive one on many fronts. Artistically I not only injested a great many works of awe and amazement, but was able to create some drawings, post up some images, and hatch new plans that will hopefully come about very soon. Some of which I will be documenting here. Stay tuned...

Sometimes I get the urge to create paintings that are too large to stretch, are impossible to photograph correctly, take up a whole wall for months leaving me no room to make anything else, loom over me like an anvil, and ultimately have no destination or intended home. So they get rolled up, put in a corner, and wait for the day that they may see light. Below are 2 such paintings. The first is 9' x 4' and the second is 6' x 9'.

Pod Hotel Backyard Mural

After 7 days of being suspended upon a shakey and most dangerous scaffold, I have completed my largest painting to date. It stands at approximately 40 feet high by 26 feet wide and resides at the newly renovated backyard lounge of the Pod Hotel (51 St. between 2nd and 3rd). My fear of death and the anxiety dreams that occurred are now past memories.
